Carolon Multi-Layer compression provides a high quality compression system now containing a unique Cupron® Copper Yarn technology in the understockings, a fabric designed to reduce bacteria and fungi. Copper oxide remains effective for the life of the garment and is unaffected by washing and drying.
The VenUS IV trial was a “pragmatic randomised controlled trial; comparing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of two layer hosiery with four layer bandages, in terms of time to healing of venous leg ulcers”.[1]
34 centres participated across England and Northern Ireland, (n=457) from both community and primary care settings were recruited. The randomisation resulted in 230 participants allocated 2 layer hosiery as their therapy regime; of which 90 moved to non-trial treatment and 227 participants to standard care of 4 layer bandages; of which 70 moved to non-trial treatment.
The average time to heal was 99 days for the hosiery group compared to 98 days for the 4 layer bandage group. Recurrence within 1 year was 14.4% for the hosiery group vs. 23.3% for the 4 layer bandage group. The cost in the hosiery group was on average £302.4 less per participant per year, and on average the hosiery group had, 0.034 more QALYS per participant per year than the 4 layer bandage group.
